KIDS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES OFTEN HAVE VISION PROBLEMS

Image
KIDS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES OFTEN HAVE VISION PROBLEMS   Vision and learning are intimately related. In fact, experts say that roughly 80 percent of what a child learns in school is information that is presented visually. So good vision is essential for students of all ages to reach their full Academic Potential.  When children have difficulty in school — from learning to read to understanding fractions to seeing  the blackboard — many parents and teachers believe these kids have vision problems....... In case of refractive errors, prescription of correct spectacles often help children better see the board in the front of the classroom and the books on their desks. Ruling out simple refractive errors is the first step in making sure your child is visually ready for school. To determine if such a problem exists, consult a " Pediatric Ophthalmologist " an eye doctor who specializes in children's vision and learning-related vision problems for a compr

EYE INJURIES COULD BE VISION THREATENING : TEACH YOUR CHILDREN SAFE PRACTICES

Image
EYE INJURIES IN CHILDREN Each year thousands of children sustain eye damage or even blindness from accidents at home, while playing or during the petty fights in school. Sports deserve particular attention, because eye injuries occur fairly often in children and young adult athletes When children participate in sports, recreation, crafts or home projects, it’s important for them to know eye safety practices and use protective glasses as appropriate. More than 90 percent of   all eye injuries can be prevented through use of suitable protective eye wear. In case , your child has an eye injury DO NOT touch, rub or apply pressure to the eye. DO NOT try to remove any object stuck in the eye. Cover the eye with a rigid protective shield, in the event of chemical exposure, flush with plenty of water and consult a Pediatric ophthalmologist at the earliest. PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE, so buy Age appropriate toys and teach your kids the safety precautions espe

SQUINT IN CHILDREN : NOT JUST A COSMETIC PROBLEM OR A FAMILIAL TRAIT, IT COULD LEAD TO LOSS OF VISION

Image
SQUINT IN CHILDREN Squint or Strabismus is a condition in which there misalignment of the eyes and the two eyes don't work in a synchronised way. When this condition is present in a child, it can lead to development of lazy eye and loss of vision in the deviated eye. It needs timely evaluation and correction for the development of vision and binocular function. Don't ignore it as a familial trait or a cosmetic problem to be corrected later in life. Proper evaluation and timely management is the key to successful outcome! #drhemalathavidyashankar #pediatricophthalmologist #squintinchidren #lazyeye #amblyopiatherapy #binocularvision

EYE CARE FOR THE APPLE OF YOUR EYE

“EVERY CHILD SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 3 EYE EXAMINATIONS BEFORE HE/SHE STARTS SCHOOL” Ideally a routine examination is performed by a Pediatrician when the child is born and then at least two routine eye examinations should be performed by a Pediatric Ophthalmologist first, when the child is around 2-3 years and the again at the age of 5 years before the child starts formal school. RED ALERTS THAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS AN EYE CHECK UP If you notice any of the following symptoms, please get their eyes checked at the earliest • Holds object or books very close to their eyes? • Excessively rub their eyes, blink or squint after close visual work? • Complain of headaches or eyestrain after reading? • Have difficulty comprehending what they have read? • Have red or watery eyes or recurrent swellings? • Performs below expected levels in school? • Have a short attention span or difficulty staying on task? • If there is a deviation of the eyes in or out? • Complaints of blurred vision w

CATARACT IN CHILDREN : RED ALERTS THAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS AN EYE CHECK UP

Image
CATARACT IN CHILDREN During the course of my practice, I see many children who complain of eye strain, not able to see the black board clearly, making lot of mistakes in school while copying from the board. Many a times, the parents feel that the child is complaining only to seek attention or to avoid studies or he just wants to wear glasses because his friend got spectacles.... But in most of the cases, the child does have an underlying cause. Though refractive errors is the most common cause of visual disability in children... Some children also have a cataract in their eyes. Cataract is any opacity in lens of the eye, which prevents the light from entering the eye and leads to decrease in visual acuity and impaired contrast sensitivity. Cataract in children could be present from birth or could be acquired. Although it is rare, childhood cataract is one of the most important causes of blindness and severe visual impairment in children and is responsible for 5–20% of
